THE CHILDREN'S CONNECTION
The Children's Connection, a program of the Human Services Council, has been responding to the community's needs of neglected, physically and sexually abused children and their families for thirty-five years. Our mission remains unchanged: to create a world where no child is harmed and no family is left without guidance. The Children's Connection, one of seven fully accredited child advocacy centers in Connecticut, is a member of the National Children's Alliance. Organized in 1974, the Children's Connection grew out of the community's desire to improve the existing system's response to child abuse. Child abuse is a community concern that has no regard for age, gender, race and/or socio-economic conditions. The formation of the Children's Connection's premise is that in order to effectively serve abused children and their families, various private and public organizations must share knowledge, resources and skills. This collaboration ensures that the needs of all children and families served are being met and works towards providing permanent solutions to the serious community problem of child abuse. |
THE GOALS OF THE CHILDREN'S CONNECTION INCLUDE:
Decrease the incidence of neglect and child sexual/physical abuse
Support children and families in crisis with neglect and sexual/physical abuse issues
Increase awareness of neglect and child sexual/physical abuse services |

CURRENT PROGRAMS OF THE CHILDREN'S CONNECTION INCLUDE:

|
Child Sexual Abuse Response Team/Multidisciplinary Team (MDT): a cooperative effort involving sixteen (16) local community groups, which works to help social service professionals, local police departments and the Department of Children and Families (DCF) to identify, substantiate and treat cases of sexual/severe physical abuse and neglect of children. This program works through referrals from the police and DCF to coordinate interviews for children of alleged child abuse and their family members. The Multidisciplinary Team reduces the trauma of multiple interviews by coordinating the information needs of the various agencies into one interview. |

|
Stop Child Abuse and Neglect Educational Awareness Program (SCAN): an educational program that provides media campaigns and seminars to local groups directly working with children to raise community awareness in order to prevent child abuse. SCAN workshops provide invaluable information and are designed for participation by parents, children, child-care workers and community leaders. |

|
Children's Bank: a unique, volunteer gifted program that collects organizes and distributes clothing, funding, gifts and other support to the abused and neglected children who make up the Department of Children and Families case rolls, as well as other local community organization with children in need. For Christmas 2009, the Children's Connection collected and distributed approximately 3,500 gifts for children who otherwise might not have received one. |
If you suspect a child is being abused, call the local police or the Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-842-2288.
